While chatting with a woman at a craft fair about complicated family members, she tried “one-upping” me with, “Well, your daughter could want to be called a man like mine.”
I spent quite a while defending the woman’s child and tried explaining that it shouldn’t be a big deal for her to address her own child as he would like her to. I gave her examples of people I know who have chosen different names and pronouns, but she felt so freaked out that I’m not sure she heard anything I said.
I did try, though, and I think she’ll catch on, given time. At least she wasn’t openly hostile to the change.
