Last and this month, I have been running a “Famous Women in History” program in the residence hall where I work. Today, three college-aged males came to me and told me in their most disgusted voice–“There’s a transgender on one of the posters!”

I explained to them, as calmly as I could, that that “transgender” was a woman named Laverne Cox, and she–they kept interrupting me to say “he”–was an actress who broke down a lot of barriers for the transgender community. I didn’t get far with them before they decided to walk away laughing.

I try so hard to believe that society is moving forward, and then shit like this happens.
